In this tutorial, Andrew Devis demonstrates 3 & 4 point editing - a technique used a great deal in video editing. Three point editing forces clips to match a sequence in or out point whilst allowing the clip to remain the length it has been specified.

Four point editing forces a clip to fit into a specified length in the timeline even if that means the clip must be sped up or slowed down.
